What the Goldstein score means

Every event in GDELT carries a Goldstein score — a measure of the theoretical impact on the stability of a country. PlaceBrief aggregates these per H3 cell to produce a single area score.

Adverse (score < −3)

Conflict, protests, sanctions, or significant disruptions. Users may want to reconsider or investigate further.

Moderate (−3 to +3)

Mixed or neutral conditions. Some activity, nothing unusual. The most common state for most destinations.

Positive (score > +3)

Stable, favorable conditions. Cooperation, positive events, low conflict. Good conditions for travel or business.

Data sources

  • GDELT Global Knowledge Graph — large-scale event database with Goldstein scores
  • RSS feeds — curated regional and international news sources
  • Weather APIs — current conditions for the resolved location

Geographic model

Events are projected onto an H3 hexagonal grid at resolution 7 — each cell roughly 5 km across. This allows efficient spatial aggregation without bounding box queries or polygon joins.
